200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training Curriculum

Maritime Yoga is a registered school with the Yoga Alliance. They provide a framework for the distribution of hours. Successful graduates will be able to register with the Yoga Alliance (optional) and use their trademark of “RYT” (Registered Yoga Teacher).

Techniques, Training and Practice:
100 hours

Topics under this category include:  Asanas (poses), pranayamas (breathing), mantra, meditation and other traditional yoga techniques. These hours will be a mix between  analytical training (in how to teach and practice the techniques) and guided practice of the techniques themselves. 

Teaching Methodology:
25 hours

Topics in this category include: Communication skills, time management, how to address the specific needs of individuals and special populations, to the degree possible in a group setting. Principles of demonstration, observation, assisting and correcting. Teaching styles, qualities of a teacher, the student learning process, business aspects of teaching yoga and more. 

Anatomy and Physiology:
20 hours

Topics in this category include: Human physical anatomy and physiology (bodily systems, organs, etc.) and will include energy anatomy and physiology (chakras, nadis, etc.). Includes both the study of anatomy and physiology along with its application to yoga practice (benefits, contraindications, healthy movement patterns, etc.). 

Yoga Philosophy, Lifestyle and Ethics:
30 hours

Topics in this category could include: The study of yoga philosophies and traditional texts. Students will gain an understanding of Yoga history as well as some key Yoga texts. Yoga scholar, Brenda Feuerstein, will be a guest instructor for many of these hours. 

Ethics for yoga teachers, such as those involving teacher – student relationships and community will also be covered as well.

Practicum:
10 hours

Topics in this category include: Practice teaching within the group as well as in a public class at the training studio, receiving and giving feedback and observing others teaching. 

Remaining Elective Contact Hours:
55 Hours

To be distributed among the five educational categories and allocated to the  program’s focus, which includes Ayurveda - the medical system from India, which has an emphasis on preventative health measures including diet and lifestyle.
